While many students finalize plans to transfer from Las Positas College, the campus enters a period of transition. A key part of this change is the election of new student government executives for the 2026-2027 academic year. Elections were held April 5 to 11.

The Las Positas Student Government utilizes funds to plan campus events and provides financial support to clubs. This year’s election featured 15 candidates, each running for one or more positions on student government.

From those who aimed for presidency to directorship of clubs, candidates campaigned around campus and on social media to garner support from the student body. While some candidates currently serve in the LPCSG, the majority are newcomers who have been active in campus clubs or the honors program.

The three presidential candidates were Daniel Vargas, Armaan Shah and Tyson Tieu. Tieu and Vargas currently serve as LPCSG senators.

Tieu, a first-year student, has a number of plans for the college as president of student government. As the current advanced senator of club engagement, he has actively supported clubs. Earlier this semester, he was involved in a training session for club officers.

“I can say that even though we have some clubs that are having rocky communication, we also have clubs that are thriving,” Tieu said, “We hope to continue doing that next year with other clubs.”

Tieu supports the development and financing of clubs and intends to continue that support in that future.

“Making a club is a fantastic thing,” Tieu said. “I’m in full support of it, and I do want all clubs to have their money.”

The voting period ended April 11, and results were announced during an LPCSG senate meeting April 15. This election saw a record turnout with 1,869 total votes. Tieu was elected LPCSG president, winning by a large margin with 480 votes and 479 abstentions. Shah followed with a total of 331 votes, and Vargas received 201 votes.

Joining Tieu on the board: Vice President Zia Sidhu, who won with 542 votes; Elyas Qaderi, director of clubs; Kevin Yukai Sun, director of events; Anthony Vuong, director of outreach and Bryant Liu, director of finance.

In an interview with The Express, Sun expressed approval of campus events intended to promote LPC’s clubs: “I think these events really promote community. I would like to add more to our school if possible.”

Yina Yoon was elected student trustee. It is noted, however, the student trustee is not a voting member of the LPCSG but a voting member of the Chabot-Las Positas Community College District district board.

“The first thing that I want to improve is the approachability,” Yoon said. “I want students to feel free and casual when they’re approaching me. … I want everyone to feel that they are heard and they’re represented in the school.”

Tieu shared the sentiment, stating, “I think it’s really important that we make sure that we all work together and represent students.”

Tieu was unavailable to comment on his electoral victory. The newly elected officers will administer the oath of office on May 7. The student trustee will take the oath during the May CLPCCD meeting.
