The first edition of LPC’s journal of honors has been completed, and is being shared on the LPC honors website! Over the course of the summer, the LPC journal of honors staff have been hard at work compiling student research for the edition. The edition is a collection of students’ research, published not just to celebrate their hard work, but also to share their findings with the LPC community.
The process of creating the first edition was not easy, according to Archisha Anshuman, an LPC honors student and web manager in charge of anonymization of submissions for the journal.
“It was a bit hectic … It’s the first of its kind in terms of being the first journal at a community college,” Anshuman said. The journal does not have the resources that four-year universities have. Being the first, the lead staff for LPC’s journal of honors had no room for error if they were to be taken seriously when their journal was reviewed.
After establishing their internal team, the staff was ready for the students to submit their research. Research featured in the journal was selected through an anonymous submission and review process in order for work to ensure an unbiased selection process.
The internal team was responsible for reviewing submissions, and the external team was responsible for web management and the overall website. A design team was in charge of the overall look and construction of the physical journal. To get the word out to the student body, a PR team was established.
When a paper is first submitted to the LPC Journal of Honors, an abstract is sent to the editor-in-chief and designated section editor for approval. The paper is judged on relevance and whether it’s well developed.
Once approved, it goes through the first round of the editorial process, in which the lead editors review the paper in its entirety, in context and anonymously. It is then sent to the editor-in-chief, where nine papers are selected for the edition. This lengthy process is intended “To ensure that each paper gets the chance it deserves,” said Anshuman.
The journal cover was ultimately decided by the design team, but the whole staff strove to convey a sense of seriousness to readers. The bright white wings against the dark black background represent the LPC mascot, the hawks, in a serious tone.
Anshuman reflected on being part of the process to create the first community college “Journal of Honors.” She said that “being the first to do anything, that’s a really fun thing because you get to explore different resources that you go through. But it’s just the interaction between them, (the collaboration)with them. That was really fun.”
The full journal is uploaded to the LPC website, along with the form for anyone interested in publishing their paper in the next issue. The journal will also be offered in a physical copy — however, the release date has not yet been determined. There is a plan to continue publishing new editions biannually.
