The ever-reigning Queen Bee graced her fans’ ears once again with her Sept. 4 re-release of “B’Day (20th Anniversary Edition).”
Twenty years ago, the world was introduced to the vulnerable, messy and unapologetically passionate side of Beyoncé that had not been shown before.
On Sept. 4, “B’Day” celebrated its 20th anniversary, a milestone that reaffirms its own status as a culture-shaking touchstone in music history. The album isn’t just a nostalgia-fueled rollercoaster. No, it is a reminder of how Beyoncé’s artistry has evolved after Destiny’s Child as an independent artist. Twenty years ago, the album was meant to serve as a declaration of independence in the form of R&B and pop.
It immerses the audience in the world of a woman in love, in rage and in pain. The album starts off with “Déjà Vu,” where the singer delivers a vocal performance that solidified her status as one of the greatest vocalists of all time.
She sings: “You know that I can’t get over you / ‘Cause everything I see is you (Oh) / And I don’t want no substitute / Baby, I swear it’s déjà vu.”
Beyoncé is a loud and proud lover, and this trend continues throughout the album, solidifying its theme of unapologetic love through every circumstance. But underneath the live congas and an ear-candy bass, she sings about being irresistibly obsessed with her lover, no matter how hard she tries to swim against that current.
The album follows the way love can transform over the course of a relationship, which leads us to later songs where Beyoncé addresses the shift in songs like “Kitty Kat” and “Ring the Alarm.” She expresses her frustration in two different ways: in love and in anger.
As she celebrates this milestone, one thing is clear: The Queen Bee isn’t just reigning. She is evolving.
The deluxe album features six new tracks that honor the original album’s swagger and vulnerability. Some tracks are even sung in Spanish to celebrate her fans around the globe.
With over 20 years of experience under her belt, this new re-release serves as a reminder to audiences worldwide that true artistry never goes out of style.
