LIVERMORE – As the sun slowly dips behind the hills, a warm evening breeze drifts across campus. A yellow brick road winds its way to the stage beneath the sky. The outdoor amphitheater at Las Positas College transforms into the Land of Oz. As the clock strikes 8 p.m., the stage lights come alive, music begins to drift through the air and the adventure begins.
This July, the Las Positas College Theatre Department invites audiences to experience “The Wizard of Oz” under the night sky and evening breeze. Presented in the Muny version of L. Frank Baum’s beloved tale, the production opened on July 18 and 19 and will finish its run on July 25 and 26 at 8 p.m.
This show features the Muny version of The “Wizard of Oz,” a musical adaptation created by The Municipal Theatre of St. Louis for large outdoor productions. It features added songs and staging, designed to energize open-air venues such as the Las Positas Amphitheater.
The production is directed and choreographed by Vinh Nguyen and stars Kiana Porr as Dorthy. This show offers a fresh take on a beloved fairytale, bringing Dorothy’s journey through Oz to life with live music, colorful costumes and a student cast.
“This unique stage version includes whimsical characters and imaginative scenes not seen in the beloved MGM film—offering a fresh yet nostalgic experience for audiences,” Titian Lish, coordinator of LPC’s Theater Arts & Actors Conservator, said in an email to the campus.
The open-air amphitheater allows audience members to experience the classic story under the stars. There is limited seating, and it is on a first-come, first-served basis. Admission begins one hour before the show starts. Blankets and jackets are recommended, and patrons are encouraged to bring lawn or camp chairs to spread out and watch the show. Picnics are welcome and audience members are invited to enjoy the desserts and food available from food trucks on select nights.
Admission is open to the public. General admission is $25 and tickets are $20 for students and staff. Additional event information can be found on the Las Positas College Theater Arts website.
