The Las Positas College Student Government (LPCSG) senate met at 4 p.m. on Feb. 11. The first order of business on the agenda was the impeachment and removal hearing for one of their own: Student Government Senator Zara Mukhtar.

Student Government President Naomi Mangini presented the articles of impeachment and a letter of impeachment. Mangini detailed the causes for Mukhtar’s impeachment to the senate and the Student Government Executive Board.

According to the letter of impeachment shown during the meeting, Mukhtar failed to attend the LPCSG spring retreat, failed to perform duties assigned, failed to attend meetings and failed to present a plan for future conduct. LPCSG bylaws state a senator may be impeached if they “Fail to perform the duties and responsibilities outlined in the officer’s respective role under the discretion of the LPCSG Advisor and President.”

Mukhtar’s responsibilities as described in the bylines are numerous: to be familiar with student rights, follow the LPCSG constitution and bylaws, to attend all senate meetings and retreats and to be in contact with the LPCSG Executive Board. The motion to impeach Mukhtar passed — three members of the LPCSG chose to abstain, but the other 22 members present voted “aye.”

A following motion to remove was passed with eight abstentions and 17 “ayes.” Mukhtar was removed from the student government with a two-thirds majority vote. Mukhtar was not present for the impeachment hearing. The remainder of the LPCSG senate meeting followed the agenda per routine, with no further comment on Mukhtar’s impeachment and removal.

The Express is currently unable to find Mukhtar’s contact following the impeachment. The LPCSG website, which maintains a list of current officers and senators, was updated following the impeachment. Mukhtar’s name was removed by Feb. 12.

A number of LPC students outside student government expressed their lack of knowledge about the impeachment, or the events that happen within student government. Student Melanie Reisner said she was unaware of the impeachment, but wanted to hear more about the goings-on within student government. It would be interesting for sure,” Reisner said.

Another student, Mayukha Cheruppoyila, was also unaware of what occurs in student government, and expressed their interest to be more aware. When notified of the impeachment, Cheruppoyila said, “Oh, really? Who?” Students who were unaware of the impeachment, or other LPCSG discussions, should know that agendas are public. No student outside of LPCSG, other than a reporter from The Express, attended this meeting.

Mangini told The Express that LPCSG was unable to make a statement regarding Mukhtar’s impeachment as of Feb. 12th.
