LIVERMORE — After losing its entire starting five from the squad that made the state tournament, the Hawks men’s basketball team also lost its assistant coach. Anthony Haskett took a job at the University of Hawaii at Hilo to work under coach Kaniela Aiona.
Haskett, who was also a financial aid outreach specialist at Las Positas, played basketball at the same school for three seasons from 2019 to 2022. Aiona was his coach. After finishing college, Haskett got his first coaching job from Hawks head coach James Giacomazzi.
The Walnut Creek native, in an email to the campus, described the move as “bittersweet.” The Hawks were 62-29 in Haskett’s three seasons with the team, making the playoffs each time. Las Positas went 4-3 in the postseason with Haskett on the bench.
“This has been an incredible start to both my career and life,” he said in the email. “I’ve been deeply appreciative of the support, collaboration, and kindness shown to me during my time here.”
The Hawks graduated all five starters. Four of them will continue their basketball careers: Elijah Mobley at the University of Alaska Anchorage, Sterling McClanahan at UC Merced, Elliot Mobley at Greenville University in Illinois, and Jorren Edmonds at Hope International University in Fullerton. Also, sophomore guard Zach Shamieh transferred to UCLA, where he will major in computer science.
After spending the last three seasons with just Haskett, Giacomazzi has added three new assistant coaches to his bench: Jerome Jenkins, a former head coach at Sacramento State; Jordan Boreman, who played at Saint Mary’s College and was the head coach at Mountain House High School; and Landis Spivey, an assistant coach at Lincoln High School.
