After 18 years of service, Las Positas College librarian Angela Amaya has been placed on leave following the college administration and district Human Resources reportedly denying medical accommodations previously granted to Amaya in prior semesters.
“This abrupt decision has greatly reduced the library’s capacity to provide the full range of services to students, faculty, and staff that the campus community has come to expect and appreciate,” LPC library coordinator Frances Hui said in an email statement.
The decision was made shortly before spring break during a meeting with LPC President Dyrell Foster, Vice President of Academic Services Nan Ho and Direct of Employee and Labor Relations Melinda Trammell.
Library staff were informed but declined to comment, citing confidentiality surrounding personnel matters.
As a result of Amaya’s leave, the library has reduced its Friday operating hours , now operating from 9 a.m. to noon instead of the previous hours 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Orientation requests are being accepted only on a case-by-case basis and must be submitted in advance. Additionally, asynchronous orientations will no longer be available until further notice.
Hui stated that the library has been operating with limited staffing for the past two years, and Amaya’s departure has further strained operations.
The specific circumstances regarding Amaya’s medical accommodations and the reasons for the denial have not been disclosed. Amaya did not respond to a request for comment.
College officials, including Foster and Ho, have not made a statement as of publication.
