The good news: the Hawks women’s volleyball team finally ended its losing streak.
The bad news: their struggles aren’t over.
The dark cloud lifted over Las Positas on Oct. 29, snapping a five-game losing streak with a much-needed 3-0 win over the Gavilan Rams. It was the Hawks’ first Coast Conference victory after losing the first four. They came home after a five-game road trip and easily handled woefully overwhelmed Gavilan, 25-17, 25-7, 25-15. Ainsley Wade’s 12 kills and Jade Dancel’s 28 assists paved the way. But the Rams came into the game 2-16 and having lost four straight.
Having gotten back on the winning side of things, the Hawks hosted a much tougher team on Oct. 31. Cabrillo, who beat Las Positas 3-0 back on Oct. 15.
The Hawks found themselves in a battle all evening against Cabrillo, which came into the game ranked No. 23 in the state in the latest poll and No. 10 in NorCal. But the Hawks would go down again 3-1. Two of the three sets Cabrillo won were close.
Las Positas dropped the first set 26-24. After winning the second set, 25-16, the hosts lost the third set 25-22. Cabrillo pulled away in the final set, 25-14.
At 14-8, The Hawks have four games remaining. The next three are against teams that already beat Las Positas. The Hawks face Monterey Peninsula, ranked No. 17 in the state, at home on Nov. 5. Then after a road game at De Anza on Nov. 7, Las Positas hosts Hartnell, No. 25 in the state, on Nov. 12.
The regular-season finale is Nov. 14 at Gavilan.
So the question becomes how strong can the Hawks make their postseason case? After winning 11 straight earlier in the season, one closing push could earn the school its first playoff berth.
