Las Positas College’s annual Welcome Back Week saw anti-abortion protesters with the organization Project Truth visiting campus to share their points of view. They have visited LPC a total of four times.

Abortion is a hot-button issue, and people across the political spectrum have passionate opinions on the topic. After speaking with anti-abortionist Jenny Ramone, it became clear that the roots of the protesters’ beliefs are religious.

“I believe abortion is a sin,” Ramone said. “This is murder, and I’m standing up, trying to share the gospel.”

Another question posed to protesters was whether or not there were extenuating circumstances in which abortion would be reasonable and moral. They had little to say.

“There is no justifiable cause for abortion,” Ramone said.

This is a blatant imposition of religion onto passersby. Expecting people to assume your position on something because of a belief system they might not even subscribe to is simply backward.

The beliefs of any single religion should not impact the autonomy of any man, woman, or gender-nonconforming person.

The protesters’ belief that there are no justifiable causes for abortion is abhorrent. There are several instances in which abortion is not only moral, but wise.

One reason someone might have an abortion is teenage pregnancy. It’s one of the most reasonable instances in which an abortion is necessary. A teen pregnancy puts not only the baby, but the mother at risk.

According to the National Institutes of Health, a teen pregnancy can result in a preterm birth. A preterm birth can cause a myriad of different complications for newborns, ranging from respiratory distress, developmental delays and gastrointestinal disorders.

Teen pregnancies can also result in an obstructed labor.

The NIH reports: “Young women under the age of 20 are more likely to experience obstructed labor, which, in the absence of a cesarean section, can result in an obstetric fistula, a break in the birth canal that allows urine and/or excrement to flow out.”

Along with the risks for the child, there are many risks for a teenage patient giving birth. Teen pregnancies have the potential to ruin lives. Some need to uproot their entire lives in order to raise their baby.

Another context in which abortion is often necessary is in cases of sexual violence.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports: “1 in 20 women in the United States have experienced a pregnancy from rape, sexual coercion, or both during their lifetimes.”

Unwanted pregnancies, especially in situations stemming from assault, can financially ruin lives and permanently traumatize victims of assault.

LPC president Dyrell Foster released an email on Sept. 10 about the protesters on campus. Foster stated that protesters of any kind have a right to our campus and they are protected under freedom of speech, regardless of whether LPC students agree with them or not.

“Individuals and groups may express viewpoints on our campus that some members of our community may find objectionable, offensive, or deeply troubling,” Foster wrote. “Permitting constitutionally protected expression does not mean that Las Positas College endorses or supports the views being expressed.”

Unfortunately, Foster is correct. Speakers and protesters of any kind are welcome to speak their minds at LPC. However, under the same protection that these protesters have, it is fair to say that their underdeveloped ideologies are unwanted on our campus.
