WASHINGTON — One Maryland city is considering an amendment to lower its voting age to 16, which would make it home to America’s youngest voters.

The proposal [PDF] would permit Takoma Park residents who are 16 years old on or by election day to register to vote and cast ballots. It applies only to local elections, such a mayor and city council, reports WTOP.

City Council member Tim Male, who proposed the initiative along with Seth Grimes, told Takoma Park Patch, “I really care about making elections easier… You meet young people who are really engaged but cannot vote.”
