Heaps of bags of rice, pasta sauce, oranges, apples and corn, oh my! The sun shining through the clouds while students gather to take part in “The Market”.
Las Positas College put on “The Market” in front of the 1600 building on Tuesday May 15, as a way of giving back to the school and the community on behalf of CalWORKs and LPC’s student government.
Amanda Ingold, CalWORKs coordinator was also attending, and she spoke to students about the organization’s program. Students interested in finding out more about the CalWORKs were encouraged to talk to Ingold.
Students flocked to “The Market” to get their share of the free grocery items offered. Don’t think of this as a charity for the students at LPC, but as a way for students to provide for themselves and their families.
LPC’s student government helped over 150 individuals and families, Tatiana Hernandez, LPC’s current student government president says.
When students first walked up, they were asked to fill out a 5 question questionnaire on computers under an LPC tent. Some of the questions asked for your name, whether you are a student at LPC and how many people are in your family (adults, seniors and children.)
After the questionnaire, students took up to two items off each table. Loose items were placed into the free bags provided.
LPC’s student government is planning to have “The Market” once every month, and during the summer semester.
