The Las Positas college women’s basketball team placed second in their opening tournament at home in the Hawks Classic.

In their first game, Thursday Nov. 10 against College of Marin, they came out on top 67-56. Marin started the game with six players. Two fouled out and one ended up on the bench with an injury.

It was not an easy win for the Hawks though as they fought for each point.

“I think we were nervous,” Hawks head Coach Clarence Morgan said. “Shots were going over the backboard in the first half and the first quarter but we calmed down.

Janelle Bumagat led all scorers with 24 points. She also added 6 assists. Samantha Roney had 19 points and 2 assists for the Hawks and Jenna Kol had 9 points and 4 assists.

The semifinals took place on Friday Nov. 11. The women faced El Camino Compton Center College, a much bigger and physical competitor.

The Hawks rose to the challenge and came out on top 51-47. Top scorers for LPC included,

Samantha Roney 12 points and 10 rebounds, Cyerra Dillard had a double double with 12 points and 11 rebounds, Taylor Freitas had 8 points and 7 rebounds while Janelle Bumagat added 7 points and 7 assists for the team win.

The win earned the women a trip to their own tournament championship game against Cuesta College.

The championship was a challenge for the Hawks and an uphill battle from the start. The Hawks played from behind the whole way.

They were able to outscore Cuesta College in the third quarter 23-20 but it wasn’t enough as Cuesta took over in the fourth quarter outscoring the Hawks 25-9 to put the game away and win the championship. The Final score was 82-50.

Leading scorers for the Hawks were Samantha Roney with 17 points and 8 rebounds, Janelle Bumagat 12 points and 4 rebounds, and Jazmyn Gonzalez 9 points and 5 rebounds.

Morgan pointed out that the team is young and growing together this season will be crucial.

“I’m proud of them, they fought,” Morgan said.
