Adult film stars in California are hit by this year’s ballot. But will it help them or limit them?

According to voterguide.sos.ca.gov, Proposition 60 will “require adult film performers to use condoms during filming of sexual intercourse. Requires producers to pay for performer vaccinations, testing, and medical examinations. Requires producers to post condoms requirement at film sites.”

Prop 60 was created by Michael Weinstein, president of the AIDS Healthcare Foundation. According to Ballotpedia.org, Weinstein believes that “adult performers be afforded the same safeguards as other California workplaces.” All contributions for Prop 60 have been provided by the AIDS Healthcare Foundation.

Public health and safety for these performers is what people voting for Prop 60 are concerned about. Enforcing the use of condoms will prevent sexually transmitted diseases. Although there is already a California law requiring condom use in adult films, this new law will give the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health more time to create lawsuits against performers and producers who don’t follow regulations. This will also allow performers to sue producers who don’t allow them to use condoms when filming.

Coalition Against Worker Harassment is the main funding against Prop 60. According to ballotpedia.org, CAWH believes that the proposition would violate worker’s privacy and cost taxpayers millions of dollars. Both the Democratic and Republican Party are opposed to this proposition. Many other organizations and businesses also oppose Prop 60.

If Prop 60 is passed, part of your tax money will go to pay for adult performer’s health screenings and other examinations. It will also allow Californians to sue these performers or distributors if any of these regulations are not shown. This will violate performer’s safety because once a lawsuit is formed, their private information is released. Information includes their real names and home addresses.

Along with legal issues, if Prop 60 is passed adult film stars plan to block their content from being viewed by California users. In an interview with KCRA3 in Sacramento, adult film star Tasha Reign says “We want regulations, but we don’t want this regulation. If you’re a Californian and you voted in a way that wasn’t supportive of that, I don’t feel like they should be able to watch my videos.”
