The Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security act, known as CARES included money for student aid. Las Positas College is receiving $1.4 million for aid to students. Requirements for who can apply for aid were given by the Federal Government.
Federal Requirements include being a citizen or a green card holder, having a high school diploma or equivalent and providing a social security number. Males must have registered for the draft in order to qualify. All students are required to have submitted a 2019-2020 FAFSA.
LPC is still working on specific criteria for aid such as how to apply and drawing up local requirements. The LPC Financial Aid Office is recommending all students fill out 2020-2021 FAFSA applications in addition to 2019-2020 application. Catherine Alfaro, Outreach Specialist with LPC Financial Aid, recommends that all students submit the FAFSA even if they do not think they will not qualify for any aid.
LPC Financial Aid started using the Cranium Café to connect with students. LPC students can find the Cranium Café on the Financial Aid website and clicking on the “chat with staff” button.
The State of California plans to release funds to aid Dreamers. Disaster Relief Assistance for Immigrants without documents. Eligible Californians may receive a one-time COVID-19 disaster relief assistance at a value of $500. A limit of two adults per household can receive this assistance with maximum assistance of $1,000 per household. More information can be found here.
LPC also added a Student Resource Guide to their website. This guide has information and links to many resources available for COVID-19 Aid for both LPC and the local communities.
LPC’s Student Services department says that once details are known an email will be sent to students with the details. The funds should soon be available for those in need.
