Family roots and positivity was all the LPC Poetry Club wanted to express. But slander and vandalism had tried to bring the group down just moments before the “In This Skin” event on May 4.

Reena Ocampo, Poetry Club member, was shocked to find the words, “f—-n stupid” in black sharpie across a flyer posting the event. She came across it in the 2400 building on the way to the event.

“I mean, I know the micro aggressions are there, but still,” Ocampo said.

The event is to support the Filipino community at LPC. Renowned poet Aimee Suzara came to answer questions and perform some readings of her poetry.

Another member, Jennie De Rose, questioned the comment asking if they are still in high school.

“This is a positive event to celebrate people’s roots,” said Rose. “We’re not trying to force anything on anybody.”

The Poetry Club is holding a campus Poetry Slam on Monday, May 9 at 7 P.M. The event is free and students will be able to present poems. $100 in prizes will also be given out.
