Marc Griesemer, a professor in the LPC Computer Science Department, died on Oct. 27, 2020. He was fighting a losing battle with cancer. Griesemer joined the faculty of Las Positas College in August 2017.
Griesemer primarily taught Computer Fundamentals, Computer Science 1 and Computer Programming Concepts CS7. In a statement to the college, Dean Nan Ho said, “Marc cared deeply about Las Positas College and his students and about the connection Las Positas College shared with Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, where Marc also worked. He had a great rapport with students and shared stories about his own career.”
Griesemer was born Dec. 4, 1973, in Seattle, Washington. He graduated from University of Washington with a bachelor’s in physics and master’s in computer science. He also did postgraduate studies at MIT and received a Ph.D. in computer science from UC Santa Barbara.
After working in the high tech industry for a few years, he started his teaching career at University of Washington, where he was a teaching associate from September 2002 until June 2005. He also became a visiting assistant professor at UC Merced in Applied Mathematics from August 2013 until May 2015, according to Ho.
In addition to teaching computer science at LPC, Greisemer also worked at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, where he worked to develop more efficient biofuels.
Griesemer liked to travel. He has taken trips to the UK and India and has also climbed Mt. Shasta.
In an email to Las Positas College, Dean Ho said, “Some of you had the privilege of working with Marc and knew how excited he was about teaching. Marc will be dearly missed.”
