The play is based on the Broadway show by Lorraine Hansberry. She was the first African American woman to perform on Broadway. Her family dealt with racial discrimination throughout their lives.
“A Raisin in the Sun” first opened on March 11, 1959, and tells the story about a poor African American family living in South Chicago during the late 1940s, as they battle with economic and racial hardships.
When the father of the family dies, the family gets a $10,000 check from his life insurance. The money brings different opportunities to each family member – from buying a new house, opening a liquor store, and attending medical school.
The play runs from May 6 to May 15, at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and a Sunday matinee at 2 p.m. Tickets for students are $10 and general admission is $15.
