As new classes arrive in the fall semester, there are also new resources for the LPC community, from a brand-new building to places to plug in. These additions are designed to help students and faculty better experience Las Positas College.
However, in order for these changes to work, students should be aware of how to fully access these resources. Because there is such a variety, students may not know how to take advantage of the newly available assets.
If you’re looking for more on-campus study time, you’re in luck. The library announced later hours for the fall semester. The Las Positas College Library, which opens at 8 a.m., will now stay open until 10 p.m. on Monday through Thursday – one hour more than before. On Fridays, the library will be open until 4 p.m. It is also now open on Saturdays, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Another new feature is the 24/7 librarian. On the website, laspositascollege.edu/library, there is an “Ask LPC Library” tab where anyone can ask questions at any time. Clicking the appropriate link will instantly connect users with a librarian.
If you’re a returning student, you may have noticed the lack of blue fences and jackhammer sounds by Parking Lot B. Construction of Classroom Building 1000 ended in May. It was officially welcomed as part of the campus on Aug. 8 at the official ribbon-cutting ceremony. Classified staff, administrative staff, faculty and students took part in the christening of the building, including some of the construction crew and the designers.
According to the college, Classroom Building 1000 is a 41,000-square-foot building with 12 classrooms, six computer labs, an anthropology lab and a large lecture hall which is similar to the hall in 2420. There are also places in the building for the learning communities on campus such as Puente and Umoja to gather.
Las Positas College Student Government has also introduced The Market, a place where you can get free groceries on a first-come, first-served basis. The Market is hosted on every third Tuesday of the month from 1 to 3 p.m. in front of 1643 and is open to all students and the surrounding community.
Here is a new addition students will particularly like: charging stations.
Student Government has purchased four stations, eight slots each, where students can get juice for their phones. They are located in the Student Government office (1643), the Tutorial Center (2401), the Library, and the Cafeteria. To use, create a numbered code, type it in, and the slot turns red when in use. Each slot can charge one phone at a time, either an Android or iPhone.
Speaking of charging, the new Classroom Building 1000 has charging stations – for cars. Hybrid and electric car drivers can now refuel while sitting in class.
